About the book

Environmental pollutants have become a major global concern. Quantum leap in industrialization, urbanization, has resulted in indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources. This has contributed to disturbing the ecological balance and depreciation in quality of environment. The contamination of ground water, surface water, soil and air with hazardous and toxic chemicals is much above the self-cleaning capacities of the environment causing progressive deterioration of the environment quality. In order to reverse the deleterious effects of global environment pollution and consequent climate changes, the need of the hour is to mandate and support sustainable approaches. Bioremediation technology-based approaches have been proven as an effective option to restore contaminated sites. Not able accomplishments of this sustainable approach include cleaning-up of polluted water and contaminated land globally. Among the different pollutants generated there are some which are highly recalcitrant for degradation and hence get accumulated in nature. Examples of these types are of both biological and non-biological origin. Keratin rich products like feather, hair, chitin, chitosan, lignin and polyphenols etc. get degraded in nature very slowly. Feather is generated in huge quantities as a by-product of poultry industry and other human activities. Pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, dyes and aromatic compounds generated from textile, paper and printing etc. get accumulated in the soil and water bodies. Further, in the modern era plastics and polyethylene have found extensive use. Stage has reached where it is difficult to think of the daily course without the use of plastic material. Plastics are one of the most recalcitrant materials generated and used and removing them from the environment has verily become a challenge. This volume of MICROBIAL BIOREMEDIATION OF CONTAMINATED SITES concentrates on cost-effective bioremediation strategies for clean-up of some of these recalcitrant pollutants. The reviews are contributed by subject experts working in the respective research areas. They bring out update information available on these selected topics, pointing out the gaps in knowledge and future lines of research that can be adopted. The book intended postgraduate students inmicrobiology / biotechnology / environmental sciences / biosciences life sciences and researchers in universities, research institutes and industrial entrepreneurs.
